The Jesse and Sara Lea Shafer Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetes

The Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Schneider Children’s is a national referral center and the first to introduce a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach in a specialized medical field in Israel. The Institute annually treats more than 15,000 children and youth who suffer from hormone and growth disorders. The Diabetes Clinic is the largest in the world. The Institute has gained international recognition through the development of new approaches to the care and prevention of diabetes in children, and is a partner in the global project to develop an artificial pancreas that will revolutionize the treatment of diabetes in the future.

The Institute provides services to patients and their families, community physicians and emergency medicine departments throughout the year, 24 hours a day. In this way, unnecessary hospitalizations are avoided and care in the home can continue. Doctors in the Institute also provide services within the community, in Clalit Health Services clinics in Holon, Ashdod, Katzrin and Ashkelon.

Endocrinology Service

The Endocrinology Service treats patients suffering from various pediatric endocrine disorders, such as growth and pubertal problems, pituitary dysfunction, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Cushing’s syndrome and obesity.

The National Center for Childhood Diabetes is one of the largest diabetes clinics in the world and the largest such center in Israel. The Center annually treats more than 1,700 patients suffering from Diabetes Type 1 and receives about 100 new cases each year.

The Clinical Research Center (CRC) was established in order to advance the research program of the Institute, which participates in joint clinical studies, both multi-center and multi-national.

 

 

Diabetes Technology Center (DTC)

---

The basic goal of the Center is to advance research towards the cure for diabetes, introduce new technologies for the treatment of diabetes, develop the artificial pancreas by closing the loop between the continuous glucose monitoring systems and pumps for continuous insulin infusion, and avoid diabetic complications.

 

The Schneider Research Center for the Study of the Interaction between Nutrition, Growth and Psychological Development was established for collaborative studies by the Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetes, the Institute of Gastroenterology, Nutrition, and Liver Diseases, and the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Schneider Children’s. One study focused on the development of a new nutritional formula for assisting children's growth without the need for medications such as growth hormone. The clinical trial showed very favorable results and the Center is now working on commercialization of the formula for worldwide distribution. The Center was recognized as an R&D Center by Tel Aviv University in 2010.
