Dear parents,
The following vital information will help you during your stay in the NICU.
At the NICU, parents are our immediate and closest partners in the treatment process. The relationship and the cooperation we establish together are essential to the success of the treatment and maybe even shorten it.
We understand that there are significant feelings of stress and anxiety that accompany the period of stay in the NICU. It is vital that you know - we are here for you!
Visits
The NICU is located on the 2nd floor of the Glass Building at Schneider Children's Medical Center.
Parents only – 24/7 access permitted.
Grandparents accompanied by one parent: Every day from 10:00 to 11:00.
Access for all other visitors is strictly forbidden.
The door to the NICU is always locked. Entrance is only with a designated magnetic key card.
On the day you are admitted to the NICU, the nurse coordinating your child's care or a Sherut Leumi volunteer (only during working hours) will supply you with a form for the security department, located on the 3rd floor of the stone building, where you will receive the magnetic card.
The Security Department's working hours are Sunday – Thursday ,from 8:00 to 15:00, phone 03-9253641.
Entering the Department
Before entering the NICU, please wash your hands up to your elbows in the initial hand-washing room at the entrance. There is an additional hygiene process before you enter your baby's room.
All staff must wash their hands before contacting the premature baby.
You must alert every staff member if you see them approaching your baby without washing their hands first.
Requests for medical or nursing information
Medical information can be requested from a senior doctor on the NICU staff every morning. Nursing information will be provided at any time by the nurse who coordinates your baby's care.
Supplies
You are kindly requested to bring your child alcohol-free wet wipes and a pacifier for the duration of your baby's stay in the NICU. Be sure to clean the pacifier once a day. For further explanation, you can contact the treatment coordinating nurse.
Parents lounge
The parents lounge is located at the entrance to the NICU. For your convenience, there are seating areas, TV, refrigerator, water bar, microwave, restrooms, shower, and storage lockers for each family. In return for a 10 NIS deposit, you will receive a key to the locker from the nurse or the Sherut Leumi volunteer. Remember to return the key when you are discharged from the department.
Do not enter the hospital rooms with bags or any other belongings.
Mobile phones
The use of mobile phones in the NICU is prohibited. After touching the phone, sanitize your hands. Phones must also be disinfected with surface cleaning wipes.
Supportive Developmental Care
As part of the treatment for premature babies, we believe in supportive developmental care planned for every premature baby's unique and personal needs. Your cooperation is essential in this treatment. The nurse will help and teach you about the kangaroo method, feeding, bathing, diapering, and more. Please do not hesitate to contact a nurse.
The medical staff, nurses, and the department's occupational therapist lead the supportive developmental care. The occupational therapist performs developmental treatments and bottle-feeding treatments as needed.
In addition, the department holds a 'welcome' workshop to get to know the department. For information regarding dates and times of the workshop, please get in touch with the care coordinator nurse.
Breast milk
Breast milk is the best nourishment for your baby. NICU nurses will gladly help you with any questions about breastfeeding and extracting milk. You can also request assistance from the department's lactation consultants.
Mothers who wish to pump milk will be provided with a sterile kit for pumping breast milk, sterile cups for storing the breast milk, identification stickers, and stickers for labeling the cups.
The kits are disposable and are intended for one pumping.
When you finish pumping, rinse the parts (except the tube) with running water, place all washed parts of the kit back in the kit bag, and place them in the container designated for the used kits.
Please note, do not throw any part of the kit into the garbage bins.
Please be sure to return all parts of the kit for the benefit of other mothers.
Newborn Resuscitation Training and Discharge Workshop
We offer a newborn resuscitation training workshop to all NICU parents. The workshop is a service provided by professional nurses and a multidisciplinary team.
Psychosocial therapy (emotional therapy)
The treatment is provided by the department's social workers, who assist you, the parents, in coping with your baby's hospitalization in the NICU. The social worker's team can also provide information and help you exercise your rights.
