New Appointment: Dr. Ron Berant, Director of Emergency Medicine

The management of Schneider Children's announced the appointment of Dr. Ron Berant as the new Director of Emergency Medicine (ER). He will replace Prof. Yehezkel Waisman, who has retired.

Dr. Berant, 45, married and a father of 3, obtained his MD from Ben Gurion University of the Negev. He completed his internship at Meir Hospital in Kfar Saba, and both his specialty in Pediatrics and sub-specialty in Pediatric Emergency Medicine with honors at Schneider Children's.

In 2012, he undertook a two-year fellowship at the Hospital for SickKids in Toronto, Canada which included a a year in emergency medicine and a second year in POCUS (Point of Care Ultrasound). After his return to Israel in 2014, Dr. Berant served as a senior physician in the ER where he headed, taught and conducted research locally and internationally in the field of POCUS.

Dr. Berant was elected president of the international P2Network for emergency medicine doctors who lead in POCUS care. He also fulfils the post of Treasurer for the Israeli Society of Clinical Pediatrics.

The Department of Emergency Medicine is the largest of its kind in the country for children and the hub of Schneider Children's. The medical team treats a broad range of emergency conditions in children who require treatment for illness or injury. It is open 24/7 throughout the year and provides care to infants, toddlers, children and adolescents up till age 18. All staff members have specialized in emergency care, and is always attentive to the special needs of children and their parents, and places the reduction of unnecessary hospitalizations as their aim.

Prof. Joseph Press, Director of Schneider Children's, stated that, "The hospital management and I congratulate Dr. Berant upon his appointment as head of the Emergency Medicine Department. I am sure that his broad experience and skill gained over many years, and his personality, will add towards his success in his new position. At the same time, we thank Prof. Yehezkel Waisman for his many years of service as head of the ER, and pay tribute to his diligence and contribution towards the hospital."
