Tumor Removed

Otolaryngologists (ENT specialists) at Schneider Children’s and Beilinson Hospital successfully removed a large tumor of some 7cm in diameter from the eye socket of 16-year-old Muhammad. The huge mass had grown inside the youth’s facial spaces close to the brain and eyeball, and thrust into the eye socket causing severe pressure on vital tissues and endangering his sense of sight.

Prof. Gideon Bechar, Director of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery at Schneider Children’s and the Rabin Medical Center, noted that “the benign tumor called a JNA (Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma) was located in a very difficult area for surgery that exacerbated its extraction through the nose. The safest way to perform the operation was through the classic technique of minimal invasive surgery – through small incisions in the face, while minimizing any aesthetic injury, and promoting speedy and effective recovery.”

The surgical team, who included Dr. Eitan Sudri, Director of Nasal, Sinus and Skull Base Surgery at Beilinson, and Dr. Dror Giloni, senior physician in the ENT Unit at Schneider Children’s, decided to perform the procedure via endoscopic navigation through the mouth.

At the end of the lengthy and complex operation, the medical team succeeded in removing the tumor via the mouth with only tiny incisions in the face. The procedure represents the highest level of this innovative technique in the world. The youth recovered quickly and was discharged a day later.
