Prof. Shai Izraeli, from Modiin, previously served as the Director of the Unit of Functional Genomics, and Childhood Leukemia and Cancer Research at Sheba Medical Center Tel Hashomer. Prof. Izraeli holds the Dora and Georgio Shapiro Chair and Head of the Dotan Center for Research of Blood Malignancies at Tel Aviv University. His breakthrough research in Molecular Biology and Genomics has led to the discovery of a new form of childhood leukemia. These findings have been translated globally into the routine diagnosis of children with leukemia and clinical trials with targeted medications in the USA in children and adults with the type of cancer identified by Prof. Izraeli’s team. Prof. Izraeli has produced over 160 publications that have appeared in prestigious scientific journals. As the recipient of many international awards, he is in demand as a lecturer all over the world. He is a member of the select Executive Board of the European Hematology Association. His “I Believe” is that advanced basic and clinical research is vital to fulfil the vision to cure every child with cancer or severe blood disease. The Department of Hematology-Oncology at Schneider Children’s is a national referral center for children with blood diseases and cancer from all over the country and is the largest of its kind in Israel. The department comprises Inpatients, Day Care, Ambulatory Clinics, Specialized Clinics, and Diagnostic and Research Laboratories. Multidisciplinary teams provide comprehensive care to the child and his family. Pediatric oncologists in the department follow international treatment protocols thus ensuring the most advanced care to children with cancer in Israel, and are leaders in progressive research of blood malignancies and cancer in children. Prof. Joseph Press, Director of Schneider Children’s, stated that “the Management of Schneider Children’s and I congratulate Prof. Shai Izraeli upon his appointment as the Director of Hematology-Oncology at Schneider Children’s. Prof. Izraeli is considered to be one of the giants in universal medical research of childhood blood diseases, and I am proud that he has joined the medical center. I have no doubt that his skills and personality will bring much success to the department.
