New Appointment: Dr. Silvana Fennig

The management at Schneider Children’s announced the appointment of pediatric psychiatrist Dr. Silvana Fennig as the new director of the Department of Psychological Medicine

The management at Schneider Children’s announced the appointment of pediatric psychiatrist Dr. Silvana Fennig as the new director of the Department of Psychological Medicine. Dr. Fennig replaces Prof. Alan Apter who retired after 15 years as head of the department. Prof. Apter will continue to serve as a senior consultant at the hospital.

Dr. Fennig, married and mother of 4, has worked at Schneider Children’s since the hospital opened. Previously, Dr. Fennig served as the Director of the Crisis Intervention Unit (Pediatrics “D”) at Schneider Children’s. Dr. Fennig is a graduate of the Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University (TAU). She completed her specialization in Child Psychiatry in Israel and at New York University, USA. Dr. Fennig serves as a senior lecturer and coordinates advanced studies in Child Psychiatry at TAU, chairs the medical society’s examinations board for child psychiatry and is a member of the board of a non-profit for eating disorders. 

The Department of Psychological Medicine at Schneider Children’s comprises designated clinics for a range of mental health disorders in children and youth for depression and suicide, anxiety, tics and Tourette, post-trauma, developmental disorders with accompanying mental morbidity, biofeedback and hypnosis, parental authority, learning disabilities, family health, combined

emotional-physical conditions, eating disorders, evaluation of obese youngsters and preparation prior to bariatric surgery, and general psychiatry. The Department also includes an inpatient unit that treats a range of psychiatric disorders with broad experience in treating eating and emotional-physical disorders, as well as a research center that accompanies clinical work and investigates the efficiency of therapies and the development of new techniques.

Departmental staff provides consultation services in the field of mental health to all hospital departments and clinics including the Emergency Medicine Department. The department’s approach to psychological medicine is based upon humanitarian ideals: complete transparency regarding the therapeutic plan with the full cooperation of the child and his family.

Prof. Joseph Press, Director of Schneider Children’s, stated that “the management of Schneider Children’s congratulates Dr. Silvana Fennig upon her appointment as director of the Department of Psychological Medicine. Dr. Fennig has been employed at the hospital since its establishment and I have no doubt that her experience, personality and skills will bring her much success in her new post.
