The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) treats all critically ill children from the age of one day until 18 years. PICU patients require close monitoring, observation and special care, and include those who have undergone complex surgeries such as organ transplantations; or were seriously injured in accidents, terror attacks or burn incidents; or suffer from chronic debilitating diseases. The Unit staff comprises pediatric intensivists, ICU nurses, ventilation technicians, physical therapists, pharmacists and psychosocial support professionals.

Medical Services

• Resuscitation – The team includes a pediatric intensivist, anesthetist and nurse who remain on 24-hour alert daily to perform resuscitation in the hospital
  
  
• Diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopies – an invasive procedure whereby a fiberoptic bronchoscope is inserted into the airway passages via the child’s mouth or nose. The scope allows the physician to view the interior canals and perform therapy/repair such as the removal of foreign objects. The service is also provided to hospitalized children or outpatients in the Day Care Hospitalization Department
  
  
• Sedation service – Known as a Unit without Pain, the medical team administers sedation to patients in Schneider Children’s who need to undergo uncomfortable or painful diagnostic or treatment procedures
